To My Best Friend, Lisa
My best friend, Lisa, is getting married next month. I couldn't be happier for her and Brian. I know they are going to be very happy. Still, it's a little strange knowing that your oldest childhood friend is getting married. Lisa and her family have lived across the street from my family for as long as I have been alive. We've been best friends practically since birth, and our friendship has stood the test of time. Looking at the two of us, I don't know that you'd ever guess we would be best friends. We're pretty different. I am quieter and more introverted. Lisa's more outgoing and energetic. She's three years older than I am. Looking at our hobbies, you wouldn't think we have much in common. But, I know differently. We both share a deep love of music, art, and horses. Growing up, we could make up stories about just about anything. I have more of her drawings than I do of my own. We both loved Belinda Carlisle and musicals. When we watched Disney movies and sang along, we always knew who would take which part. As we grew older, our interests changed a bit. We didn't always agree, but somehow, that was never really a problem.
When I entered high school, she was there to watch out for me at band camp and at school. My favorite memories are of her driving me to Symphonic Band rehearsals on Wednesday nights, singing along to a weird Belgian pop song about Rasputin. The other day I found all my old mixed tapes that she's made for me over the years. There are the typical songs we both loved, and then there are the random, really bizarre songs that she would find just for me. Listening to the tapes makes me a bit nostalgic, but I can't help laughing when I hear certain songs. I know that she is starting a new chapter in her life, and that we won't have as much time together as we once did. Still, our friendship has been going strong for twenty-four years, so I am not worried. I know we'll weather the next twenty-four just fine. No matter what happens, or how much we change, Lisa will always be my best friend. I love her with all of my heart. So, Stroganoff, this one's for you!
